I Can't I'm Mormon

One of the common things I’m asked about being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is, do I find it difficult to be a member of such a strict religion. People often say to me, there are a lot of nice things about your church, but I don’t think I could give up all the fun stuff. I think that I have a lot of fun, so I always ask, what is that you think Mormons can’t do?

Sex, Sex, Sex! This is usually number one on the list. Without going into too much detail, I assure them that I have A LOT of sex. One of the Mormon stereotypes is that we all have tons of kids. Well, I don’t want to give the birds and the bees talk right now, but how can we be baby makers and sex deprived at the same time? I can’t have non-marital sexual relations. Funny thing is most religions teach this. I usually ask what religion they are and most of the time they agree that their religion teaches this too, “but it’s not like the pastor will do something to me they’ll say”. I’m not sure what non-Mormons envision, but there are no bedroom police in the LDS Church. Among the many church callings you can receive, that does not happen to be one of them. No one runs into the bedroom, or knocks on your fogged-up car window and says GOTCHA! No one stands at the pulpit and says would the congregation please shun Brother or Sister so and so, they were caught engaging in yada yada. Relax, there are no scarlet A’s to be worn.

I can’t drink alcohol; any of you that think Mormons should drink have never been to a function with my Mother-in-law’s side of the family. Attend just one and you’ll be asking us all to blow and pee on a stick! The good part is we’ll all probably come up clean, bad news, that doesn’t explain what we’re high on. (I could also refer to some Utah drivers not needing alcohol to swerve all over the road, but I won't). I can’t smoke; personally I wouldn’t smoke even if I were not a member of the LDS faith.

I can’t: caffinate, tattoo, look at porn, watch R-rated movies, wear fashionable clothing, pierce, swear, gamble, lie, cheat, steal, the list goes on and on. It’s not actually that Mormons can’t do these things, because I myself am not perfect, and believe me there are Mormons who do all of the above, but it’s a matter of choice. There are certain things that faithful members of the LDS church choose not to do and there are many, many people of different faiths and beliefs who also choose to refrain from some of these things. So like Sista Beehive said the other day, it shouldn’t be I can’t I’m Mormon, it should be I won’t I’m Mormon.

Ok, so I won’t be the chick who got drunk last night, gambled away all my money, woke up in some random dudes apartment, can’t find my tube top or my belly button ring, for some odd reason has random dude’s name tattooed on my arm, has an undetected STD, dude where’s my car, with a #1 hit on Youtube cause random dude taped it all, but know that it was my choice, so don’t you dare blame me for missing out on all that fun on the LDS church.

This isn't related to the post, but SISTAS! I think your Twitter account has been compromised! I just got a spam DM from you and I'm sure you would never do such a thing, so hurry before your account's all the way down the crapper!

Life is much less complicated being a Sista in the Mormon faith!

Great post! Here is Costa Rica when people ask us about our family and we tell them we have 7 children they always give the Latino joke, "didn't you guys have a t.v?"
(Actually we didn't but we just laugh and let them enjoy their joke.)

Great Post! Some people need to have drink or smoke to calm their nerves so that they can speak in front of a crowded room, some need to have a drink or smoke so that they can perform. We don't need that. I have never felt like the LDS church was restrictive, I have always felt that me joining the LDS church was freeing! I have never been adicted to anything, therefore I have more freedoms then many of the people I went to high school with.

My husband and I have been sitting here reading a bunch of your posts and are laughing like fools. Thanks for the great blog!

I have heard it from my mom and from local authorities (and totally agree)...as a mormon(who follows the rules) I am not bound by addiction. I am not tied to a habit. I am free. Like you said, it is all about a choice.

Agency is one of the most priceless gifts. And when wise choices are made, bountiful blessings are received. Although, sometimes we don't realize that until later in life. We truly do reap what we sow.

You're so right! I'm a convert and I didn't do any of the restricted stuff before I joined. They said I was a 'dry Mormon', lol. I think it's just making smart choices. That's one reason why I knew the church was for me. A whole congregation full of people who also realize what a good idea it is not to drink, smoke, or do drugs.

You're spot on Laurel. Unfortunately the "I Can't I'm Mormon" T-shirts are a little funnier and so I think the "I won't I'm Mormon" T-shirts will never be big sellers.

Too bad.

This is a fun post and addresses one of my pet peeves...being told that I "can't" do things because I'm Mormon. Hello. Free country, right? I choose. I CHOOSE.

Well said!

well said. I have thought about a post like this but I couldn't figure out how to go about it. You did it brilliantly

You know I love being a part of the LDS church. I'm only 15 and have definitely learned that our rules are to help us fulfill our lives and they're a set in stone set of rules. I mean, with these, we know EXACTLY what we should and shouldn't do. They're not restrictions. They're like... a guideline to the perfect life! Haha, we've been told the difference between right and wrong and although we know all of these things and all of these rights and wrongs and dos and don'ts, we still do them. Haha, of course no one is perfect. You guys are great and I love following your posts. Thanks a bunch!

When you are a child or immature you look at commandments as being restrictive but as you mature you realize how liberating they are.

Because I can't because I am a Mormon, I will never be busted for braking into some ones home to steal their stuff so that I can hawk it to feed my (insert drug of choice) habit.

Because I can't because I am Mormon, I will never subject the person I love the most, my spouse, to a STD and she will NEVER have to open the the door to a stranger claiming that I am their long lost parent.

Because I can't because I am a Mormon, I will not be a slave to cigarettes and alcohol and other addictive substances.

Because I can't because I am Mormon, I don't have to spend my life regretting all those nights that I can't remember because I was too stoned and wonder what I did?

Because I can't because I am Mormon, I don't have to worry about what that tattoo is going to look like when 80. BTW what does a humming bird on a saggy breast look like at age 80? the flower on the ankle might blend in with the varicose veins.

You're a mormon??? That is too bad. Mormonism is not even a religion. It is a cult. The religion of Islam has more in common with Christianity than the mormon cult.

Mormonism teaches a different god than Christianity.

Mormonism teaches that god was once a physical man who had sexual realtions with Mary and eventually attained god hood status

Mormon doctrine teaches a Jesus who not the same as the Jesus of Christianity. The mormon Jesus is the brother of Satan

And if you are a good little mormon...then the mormon cult teaches that you can become a god over your own planet along with all the other gods taught by mormonism. As a subserivant seconod class citizen, a good mormon woman's ultimate reward is to be eternally pregnant from her mormon god-man to populate their own planet.

good anonymous post idiot. Don't just say things just because your pastor told them to you. Nice job at twisting around beliefs and making them seem stupid. Remember when Jesus walked around talking down on people and telling them their religion was a cult? oh wait, that never happened. Is that the Jesus you believe. At least try to study a religion before writing a hateful comment

Haha thank you for this post! I loved it! Since joining the church, I have never felt restricted or like I missed out on all of the "fun" things in life... quite the opposite actually... I've never been happier!

Hey Sistas,
I love it. It is so nice to find people like yourselves taking the time to stand up for how wonderful the LDS church is. I am so proud of you. I am a bishop of a ward in Cedar City, Ut. I wish all members would hold their candles high for all the world to see, just as you both are doing. God bless you. I love your last thoughts. The truth shall set you free.
